The Fenland Wood Turners November competion

This years November competition was a Box with a lid there was 25 entries and very good they were.
Each one has a ticket with a number and every member has one vote so they write the number they feel should win.

The bell is a box with a lid which is a surprise  very good idea.

The box with the white pattern is in fact a bit of lace behind a glass window.

The photos are not very good as the turnings are far better than they look with screw lids and patterns in the lid or in the box.

The boxes in the photo above are from left third middle is first and right is Second.
First was Vic Stone Second Barry Cummings and Third was Doug Thompson.

Prizes were given for all three winners.

The items above are just items that people have brought in for the table these are recorded and at the AGM one name is pulled out the hat and the winner gets a free membership for next year.

Wednesday 30th June Wood turners

The fenland wood turners meeting on the 30th June had Chris and Rita Norton from Norfolk.
Chris Turned wooden fruit and Rita Painted some of the items.
The painted Apples are some of the best I have seen it was a very enjoyable Evening there was 48 people turned up and some were on holiday.
I forgot my camera so pictures of the finished fruit for you to look at Sorry.
Chris and Rita are a good double act and work well together.
She is always putting him right a bit like the female voice on a sat nav.

Friday 2nd July 2010
I took the dogs done the bank tonight, the fishermen were out in force tonight.
I took my camera tonight and caught this sunset back at the car just shows how flat it is around here.

I also noticed these little frogs were moving about in the long grass they were about 15mm in size or half inch to us older people you can see by the blades of grass.

This one was just looking up at me the dogs never noticed any of them.
I also see the Barn owl flying while I was having a word with the fishermen.
The owl had a vole or mouse in its talons when it come back along the drain he must have some young at the pumping station down the bank there are some owl boxes attached to the side of the pump house.

I will have to tell you about the holiday later as I want to jump in the shower as I have been on the garden all day.

Friday11th June 2010 woodworking show

I am sorry for not being on here lately as we have been on Holiday in Suffolk for 2 weeks and I have not been online till tonight.

Any way on with the blog I will tell you more about the holiday on Thursday night.
The wood working show was a good show and I helped out with the stand Thursday and Friday.
here are a few more items that came in on Friday 11th June 2010

This bandstand Clock is the biggest I have seen and was made by Ron Pannell from the Fenland wood turners Club. Which meet on the last Wednesday of the month which is tomorrow night at the Spalding common Community Center at 7.00pm

This is an inside out fruit stand but I have no idea who made it but it was well done.

Ron's clock stands 2 feet high and stands out on the stand above all the other Items.

The segmented work was done by Stan Knowles he must have some patients more than me I know.

A gentleman came on the stand on the Friday and said he wanted to have a word I thought I recognised him but was not to sure.
He was my cousin I had not seen for years it was great catching up he left his number so I will have to ring him and catch up some more a small world I must say.
Work was hard yesterday catching up after 2 weeks but the lad I left in charge did a good job but he said he was pleased I was back he now knows that I do a lot more than riding about in the car.
His words were I have aged in 2 weeks and you have a sun tan you got the best deal.
(but he learnt a lot).
I have to go as I have bits to do for tomorrow night at the club as i have left i till the last minute as I always do.

The springfields woodworking show

I helped out at the woodworking show at Springfield's Exhibition center next to the shopping area.
The fenland wood turners have a stand at the show it is to promote the club .
These are some of the items that will be on show more will be bought in by members Friday and Saturday.

Some of the larger bowls and platters.

Some of the items were in the club competition at the last meeting in May.

The 1st 2nd & 3rd winners are on the middle shelf.
The organisers have given the club a larger stand than last year.

We had to wait till 12.00 noon before we could put the stand together , The chair is a rocker and is made by a member.

The other 3 items are made of very small bits of wood all glued together he has made lots of these bits .

The show is on until Sunday 13th June 2010 opens at 10.00am and shuts at 4.00pm.

26th May Fenland woodturners Competion night

The Fenland Wood turners have 2 competitions a year and the members that are in the hall on the night have 1 vote and its the members that pick the winner so that's the fairest way to do it we feel.
Each competitor brings the item to the table in a bag and walks away the committee members then put out the items and put a raffle ticket at the side of the item the members then vote by putting the number they think should win on a bit of paper when everyone has voted the committee or 3 members that have not entered count the votes.
This competition is an open one to members so can turn any thing they like some competitions have been for clocks, tea cups and candle sticks .
There is a 1st 2nd and third prize.

The competition winners were from the left 1st The winner was made by Robert Pues 2nd was Barry Cummings and 3rd by John Walker.

The first was made out of Ash and was stain with ebony dye with a high polish, 2nd was made of Yew 3rd was made of Yew, sycamore,

Club and committee member Trevor Blackburn had the Lathe going and later members were having a go thread chasing.

The 2nd lathe was manned by member Neville Richardson who had the thread chasers out so any member who was thinking of buying a set could have a go before they buy a set as they can be quite expensive.
Thank you Neville.

As well as the competition the members bring items for the ideas table.

Left to right 3rd and 2nd

Other entries to the competition

Nice salad bowl with servers made from ash

Left to right 1st and the clock on the right was forth but no prizes are given for 4th it is a circus clown.

The Pictures are not very good the items look better in the flesh (wood) so to speak.

Nobody tried the cakes all made from wood in paper cake cases.

From the left the member who made the wooden bowl out of small bits of wood makes large vases and urns he has more time and patients than me.
The plate on the right has pierce work on the edges was made by a female member of the club who has won the competition a few times and keeps the male members on there toes.

The false ivory screw top pin box that was made and given to the club by John Birkley was auction off for £10 the money going to the club

If you would like to see the competition work they will all be on display at the Wood working show at Spring fields center at Spalding from the 11th June to the 13th June entry is free 10am -4pm all days and the wives can always go shopping round the center.
The Wood working show has all the main trade stands.(Free Parking)
See web site for details http://www.wws1.co.uk/

The Fenland Woodturners April meeting

The Fenland Wood turners meet at the Spalding Common Community centre on the last Wednesday of the month.
I am a founder member of the club and still and active member.
At the meeting on Wednesday 25th April 2010 we had John Berkeley demonstrating, He was very good as the members are from beginners to near professionals he had some thing for all.
John turns plastics and False Ivory/ Horn. He turned 2 items a small Pepper pot in a patterned Plastic and a pill box in False ivory. See photos below of pill box

sorry about the photos as I'm no David Bailey.
The box is 23mm across and 50mm high it is in 2 pieces and screws together its the screw threading that takes the time and John went into thread chasing in great detail.
I have bought the raw material from John in the past for turning walking stick tops and inlays.
The next meeting is a club night we have an open competition and one of the members is going to bring his thread chasers so that members can have a go.
the club has been invited to the woodworking show at Springfield's exhibition center at Spalding from 11th June to the 13th June to show off our turned pieces and hopefully all the competition pieces will be on display.
Talking about the Springfield's Exhibition center its the Spalding Flower show this weekend .
They have lots of floats covered in flowers mainly Tulips. I have not been to the show for 10 years and its right on the door step as they say.
The Boston May Fair starts this weekend as well it OK if you like the fair.
Well I will have to go as the dogs are at the door wanting to go out.
